Supported through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Knorr-Bremse India Pvt. Ltd., SWAYAM is a holistic sanitation and sustainability project designed to uplift urban slum communities like Nepali Camp.

Through such activities, IAESPH and its partners aim not only to improve physical infrastructure but to transform mindsets, creating healthier, more sustainable, and empowered communities.
On 27 April 2025, the International Academy of Environmental Sanitation and Public Health (IAESPH), under its SWAYAM project, organized a Cleanliness Drive and Children's Painting Competition at the Nepali Camp slum in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. This vibrant and densely populated community of nearly 3,000 residents came together to take part in an event aimed at improving hygiene awareness and promoting environmental responsibility.
The day began with a creative painting competition where local children expressed their thoughts on cleanliness and environmental care through colorful and meaningful artwork. Their participation showcased not only talent but also an impressive understanding of the importance of sanitation and hygiene in daily life.
Following this, a community-wide cleanliness drive brought together men, women, and children, who worked side by side to clean up shared spaces. This activity wasn't just about removing waste — it was about sending a clear message: that a clean and healthy living environment is a shared responsibility that benefits everyone.
The event was marked by enthusiastic participation and high community engagement, reflecting a growing sense of pride and ownership among residents. It sparked important conversations on maintaining hygienic surroundings and encouraged practical action at the grassroots level.
Adding to the success of the event was the active involvement of Master's students from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati, who were placed with Sulabh International/IAESPH as part of their fieldwork. Their support in mobilizing participants and helping organize activities further strengthened the outreach and impact of the initiative.
By combining creativity, hands-on action, and local ownership, the Cleanliness Drive and Painting Competition under the SWAYAM project demonstrated how community-based activities can play a powerful role in driving positive behavior change and improving living conditions in urban slum areas.
